Abstract
The usefulness of waist to hip ratio estimated by bioelectric impedance analysis in diagnosing metabolic syndrome based on NCEP-ATP III guideline Background: Estimating the quantity and distribution of body fat is essential in the diagnosis and treatment of obesity. Recent tools based on the bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) not only demonstrate whole body fat, but also display several indicators which reflect intraabdominal fat. Currently, there have only been very few studies about clinical implication of these indicators. Method: This study was based on the data of 132 patients (75 males, 57 females) visiting one particular university hospital of Korea. Waist to hip ratio (WHR) was calculated after directly measuring their waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference, and WHR inferenced by Inbody 720(BIAWHR) was recorded. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to compare the predictability of WC, WHR and BIA-WHR in diagnosing metabolic syndrome by means of the 2005 modified Adult Treatment Panel III definition based on the American Heart Association and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Results: The mean age in each sexualities were 49.2¡¾11.4 in males, 43.1¡¾11.7 in females, mean BMI were 23.97¡¾2.86kg/m2, 23.97¡¾2.86kg/m2. Irrespective of the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, WHR and BIA-WHR did not show to have significant distinction in both sexualities. The area under the curve (AUC) in the ROC analysis was calculated to be BIAWHR 0.7259, WHR 0.6782, and WC 0.6459 in male recipients, and BIAWHR 0.9503, WHR 0.9273, and WC 0.9018 in females. In neither case of each sexualities the indicators had no significant statistical distinction. Conclusion: WHR-BIA was shown not to be inferior on diagnosing metabolic syndrome compared to directly measured WC or WHR.
